"We're looking at a lot of serious charges here . . ."
The state’s attorney ran his fingers across the pages before him while reading the list of offenses Phil Hamman had committed. Hamman was headed down a dark road filled with violence, crime, and death. He was still reeling from a childhood spent with his dysfunctional family in an impoverished neighborhood where he faced bullies, met killers, learned to fist fight, and went home daily to a life of domestic abuse. He turned violent and angry, as well, having found a group of peers who only escalated the turmoil. Clashes with the police, multiple arrests, bribery, and assaults were their specialty. Until one fateful night, a meeting with destiny changed him forever, filling him with a determination that led to a thirty-year career working with some of the most troubled teenagers to right their own paths in life. disORDER will captivate readers with an unforgettable, fast-paced story of violence, then love and redemption. This memoir is a chilling yet heartwarming story of overcoming adversity.

The setting is Sioux Falls, South Dakota a small city planted right in the middle of America. Sioux Falls is surrounded by the Midwestern plains, an agrarian landscape, marked by old two story farm houses and plenty of church steeples. It is supposed to be a Norman Rockwell illustration where folks are free of urban blight and societal disorders. Sioux Falls' children should be playing baseball, fishing, and going to Sunday School.Phil challenges Midwestern small town utopian myth similar to author Sinclair Lewis attacked the social disorders in his small town America. Phil's faced the same social disorders in Sioux Falls as those raised in larger urban areas. He experienced domestic abuse, alcoholism, violence, crimes, and whatever atrocities society could muster. This leads the reader to the crux of the story, where as an adult at some point we come to a crossroads and have the opportunity to respond to life's dilemma in a positive way. One may choose to respond by repeating the dysfunctions and continue to cycle downward. Another choice is to attempt overcome the past and find a better way to live. disORDER gives one man's answer.

disORDER edition by Phil Hamman Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
Once again Phil Hamman creates a wonderful collection of stories about his childhood that, while filled with violence, bring a sense of hope and encouragement. I could not put it down and read the whole book in one day. It reminded me that no matter how bad a life, faith in Jesus Christ can change anyone who wants to. I love this book as much as Phil's first book.
This book is great in so many ways. This is a story of a young man who was surviving anyway he knew how. It is a story of someone who found himself the hard way. It is a love story and his dedication to his wife Sandy. The experiences that happened to Phil molded him into the person, teacher, coach, mentor, friend, husband, and father he is today. A lesson to anyone that the past does not have to define who we are. Your life can change at anytime with the right people in your path.
I grew up in the neighborhood and saw none of what was talked about in the book but it did bring back alot of memories from that time. Names, places and some situations. Phil did a great job of telling the story.
disOrder? No, just a very quiet house of a teenage daughter and husband reading Phil Hamman's books. Miracles can come in many forms. What book-hating teenage daughter tells her Mom (me), to be quiet so she can read? Yes, the same one who continued to get her point across by covering her head with her comforter to drown my interruptive chattering! What more of a compliment can a Mother of a teenager give?
After reading the first book written by Phil, I thought he surely ran out of stories to tell until I read his new book disORDER !! This book is incredible. I also grew up in Sioux Falls and my Dad was a great friend of Phil's whom he mentions in this new book. The life that Phil has overcome as a child to a young adult should have killed him but God works in ways we dont always understand until later in life. I enjoyed the lay out of the book with many short stories and I sure hope there are more books to come. I am not a big reader but I could not put this down once I started!!!!!
It is hard to believe that Phil survived his childhood let alone go on to change the lives of many. This is a gripping story that shares the harsh reality of a life that no child should have to endure. I was both drawn to the telling of this story and yet could only read a few chapters at a time because of the brutality that was real. While many may not believe this brutality can exist, it still does in the lives of many children even today. I commend Phil for sharing this story which had to be hard but can help change lives for those who cannot speak for themselves. God's grace is shared here in an honest and compelling way.
I have read Phil's first book and now this one, I am very proud of Phil and the accomplishments he has achieved through the storms of growing up. I was a quiet bystander at the age of 16 escaping my own dysfunctional family life when I first met Phil and some of the people talked about in his books. I was witness to some of the fights and heard about many of the events the same day or week that they happened. The books bring back the heightened emotions of the events as I sat watching these guys tell each other what had just transpired. I can see their faces as if it were yesterday. To imagine any of them becoming something more than what I had known is hard to believe, but Phil is a living example of what can be if one only has the courage. Thanks Phil
